Camping on Memorial Day Weekend
Several families in our circle of friends at church have a family tradition of camping on Memorial Day weekend. In the past, most of us visited Fall Creek Falls State Park but in recent years the venue has changed to Salt Lick Campground. Our family has not camped on Memorial Day weekend since before Ellen was born. We have camping on other weekends, but have missed making reservations for this very popular weekend. We almost missed it this year. Back in February, someone reminded me about the camping trip and when I checked on reservations, only two sites were left. The site that we got was on the woodland loop, which was cooler than beside the lake, but it was also smaller and farther away from most of our friends. We had a great time, anyway. We would load up the truck and drive around, making visits, or ride bikes and walk. The campground is beside a lake with a nice little sandy beach, so the kids had a great time over there, even if the lake was ice-cold!
The weather was beautiful and except for a few sprinkles, it didn't rain! That made a huge difference! We had a small setback on the way there as John started running a temperature. We turned around and went back to Lebanon to the walk-in clinic, confirmed a case of strep, bought an antibiotic and Motrin and traveled on our way!
Our favorite part of the whole weekend has always been the worship service on Sunday morning. Sometimes we don't see a few of the families until that morning. This year, Mike Kibbe led singing and Doug Williams preached. There's just something special about worshipping outside. This photo was taken following services.
